Maintaining a library takes a lot of work. Especially when we're talking about a library sporting a collection as big as Reyse's royal library. Dusting off the many shelves, returning books to their proper locations, helping nobles find a book on their chosen subject ... Obviously, these are not the sort of tasks suited for the noble class itself. So, they employ others to do this kind of work for them. In Reyse, this is the Dias family.

For several generations now, Marietta's family has been taking care of the Royal Public Library. This is very much a full-time job, and when Marietta was born, she practically grew up in the aisles of the biggest library in all of Fairn. Since her parents were too busy to keep a small child occupied all day, Marietta was taught to read at a young age. Fortunately, the young girl was a fast learner, and she seemed to delight in reading.

So for years, that's what she did. While her parents were taking care of the library, Marietta read. She read of valiant knights performing their brave deeds for love, adventure, or the future of the kingdom. She read of Fairn, its lands, the people living in it, and of their history. She read of magic, and the wise and powerful mages who guide the Kingdom and command the forces of nature at their call. And she probably read some things she should not have been reading at her age. Regardless, the little girl read, and loved all of it.

But little girls tend to grow up, and Marietta was no different. As she got older, instead of simply reading about life outside the library, Marietta wanted to experience it for herself. This, however, was impossible. The Dias family might have been the caretakers of the royal library, but they were essentially still commoners. Having a commoner girl walk around in the noble's part of Reyse was hardly appropriate. And while their position insured them a comfortable life, it didn't do much for their financial position. Which meant sending Marietta off to some sort of education wasn't an option either.

Stuck in this position, Marietta helped out in the library, despite her frustration and boredom. The place that once connected her world to infinite others had changed into a cage, a prison instead. So when the testors came on Marietta's 19th birthday, and she was judged to have the potential to become a mage, Marietta couldn't have been happier. This was the chance she'd been waiting for, and she wasn't about to let it get away.

Marietta used to be an energetic girl, always running around in the library, reading as many different books as she could. While she always was a bit willfull, there were more than enough things to keep her occupied. Of course, when she grew older and found out she was stuck in the library when she wanted to go outside, this willfullness changed into stubbornness, and eventually became a source of frustration and boredom. Over the course of several years, Marietta changed into a mostly withdrawn person. Unresponsive, and doing her work or reading in silence.

But being able to go to Everthorne, to finally leave the library and do things she has only read about in books has completely revived the energetic part of her. She's going to become a mage, meet new people, see new places, do great things, and nothing will be able to stop her! Saying Marietta is confident in her chances would be an understatement.

This confidence isn't entirely unfounded. Marietta is pretty sharp, and she has read a lot on many different subjects. But being well-read isn't everything there is to becoming a mage, and Marietta doesn't do quite so well at dealing with others. She's bossy, stubborn and less than subtle. She does know how to act around nobles, since they were about the only people who used the library, but has a strong dislike for them. After all, they were the reason she was stuck there to begin with.

Marietta is of average height, with an average build. As far as appearance goes, her long pink hair and strong eyes of the same color are the only things about her that really stand out. She does take good care of her hair, which she wears down with a ribbon at the back.
